Sponsored by University of California Riverside Extension and UCR T'ai-chi club. Harvey Kurland, the University of California, Riverside Extension and Northwest T'ai-Chi Ch'uan Association has again promoted the largest ALL T'AI-CHI CH'UAN Tournament in Southern California. According to competitors and spectators alike, the THIRD UCR-NWTCCA EXHIBITION and SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA T'AI-CHI CH'UAN TOURNAMENT on June 12th, 1993 was exciting, well organized and fairly judged. The full day event played to a standing-room-only crowd.
COMPARING
APPLES TO APPLES The novel part of this tournament that held it apart from others is what Kurland calls, "Comparing apples to apples." He had separate divisions for KUANG PING style (The he was the first to do so), CHENG (Man-Ch'ing) style, TCHOUNG style, as well as standard OPEN YANG style. While all these schools do versions of YANG STYLE T'ai-chi ch'uan small differences often lead to bias in judging. This way competitors can more accurately compared to their peers. This is the first tournament in the US to have a category for Kuang P'ing (Guang Ping) and Tchoung Forms starting in 1990 and may have been the first to have a Cheng style category. Kurland wants to bring area instructors together to develop a fair judging/ competition system and eliminate bias. This has become the major t'ai-chi ch'uan event in Southern California. DEMONSTRATIONS SHOWED THE REAL POWER OF KUNG-FU The tournament followed the exciting Exhibition of AIKIDO, PA-KUA, PA-CHI, CHEN style, YANG style, PANGAMOT, and KUNG-FU SAN SOO. Each art showing its devastating potential. From Monterey Park, Sifu Jason Tsou and his students demonstrated the forms and applications of Pa-kua and Chen style as well as the powerful Pa-Chi style. Pa-chi is a hard stylist's hard style. Sifu Harvey Kurland demonstrated more relaxed Yang style "Hidden" applications, t'ai-chi walking stick techniques and pa-kua. Kurland amazed the audience with how powerful the seemingly soft t'ai-chi ch'uan applications could be. Some Yang students commented they had no idea that the Yang form was so effective. Sifu Dong Meyong demonstrated the rarely seen devastating Philippines art of Pangamot. Sifu Dong Meyong and his Loma Linda students treated the audience to an exciting weapon show, women's self defense, weapons defenses, and full speed stick fighting. Sifu Chris Luth of Solano Beach demonstrated his famous CHENG style competition form and sword sparring. Sifu Dave Hopkins and Sifu Gary Sims lead ten Inland Empire KUNG-FU SAN SOO instructors in the "SAN SOO Workout" a brutal self defense oriented system of fighting. The Japanese art of Aikido was demonstrated by Sensei Ace Atkinson and the UCR Aikido club. RESULTS OF THE COMPETITION PLACE
